For
a few weeks, I’ve wanted to create my own homemade mouthwash using essential
oils and Xylitol. Today, I finally did
it, and I’m so excited about it! I’ll never have to buy mouthwash again!
Here’s the recipe I put together:
Here’s the recipe I put together:
MA's Homemade Mouthwash with Essential Oils
16 oz mason jar
16 oz mason jar
1
½ cups of distilled water
2
tablespoons of baking soda
3
packages of Xylitol (1 to 1 ½ teaspoons)
8
drops of peppermint essential oil
4
drops of melaleuca (tea tree) essential oil
cap to an old mouthwash bottle (for measuring each use)
I
put all the ingredients in a mason jar and shook well.
Voila! It was refreshing and
minty, but not overpowering. If you
prefer a stronger mint effect, just add a few more drops of essential oil. You can also substitute Wintergreen essential oil instead of Peppermint. Or
do a combination of both.
Since
the baking soda will have a tendency to settle at the bottom, be sure to always
shake before using. For use, I pour the mouthwash from the mason jar into the cap of an old mouthwash bottle.
Do
not store the mouthwash in a plastic bottle due to the power of the essential
oils. Essential oils stored long term in
a plastic bottle will begin to break down the plastic, which will leach into the mouthwash and also affect the properties of the oils.
If you decide to try this mouthwash recipe, let me know what you think. I tweak with my recipes all the time, so always check the comments to see if I've posted other versions of this recipe.

Recipe works great! Great replacement for the mouthwash I was getting from Trader Joe's.
ReplyDeleteI tend to like the flavor better with 1 tablespoon of baking soda instead of 2.
